Blackstrap Molasses, steaming water, and a splash of milk (or cream) combine to make this cup of hot comfort. The robust flavor provides a great caffeine-free coffee alternative on a chilly winter day. The Farmer Boys beg me to make them a “steamer” after a chilly day chasing sheep! My Farmer, who doesn’t really care for coffee, will request this steamer in the fall and winter months.
I love coffee but try to stay away from caffeine generally. I won’t go as far to say that this steamer is a coffee replacement, but it does have a robust flavor. It’s one that all of my little Farmers can enjoy because there is no caffeine. I actually feel good about the fact that I am providing some vital minerals (iron and calcium) for their growing bodies!
Blackstrap molasses is great stuff! Not only do we add it to this drink, I also drizzle it in some of my savory dishes such as spaghetti or taco meat to boost the iron content and to provide a richer flavor.
I order my blackstrap molasses from Azure Standard. (By the way, if you are in the Smyrna area, I am now coordinating the drop point at TriStar Stonecrest Medical Center! Let’s talk!) You may be able to find blackstrap molasses in your local grocery store (try the organic or health food section). You can also order the Golden Barrel brand through Amazon.
Nutrition Bite: Rack up on your iron and calcium intake – just one tablespoon of blackstrap molasses provides 20% Daily Value for each of these vital minerals!
Not a fan of hot drinks? Try this recipe iced! Dissolve the blackstrap molasses in a little hot or warm water and add add cold water and add a few ice cubes.
Need to boost your protein intake? Whisk in 1/2 to 1 scoop grass fed whey protein powder (available on Amazon here or Azure Standard here) or organic rice protein powder to the iced drink for a protein drink on the go. (The stronger molasses flavor will mask the “protein taste” if you don’t typically care for protein powder.)
